🌲 Project Description – The Carpathian Garden 🌲
Forests cover almost 40% of Europe, and they’re often called “indispensable” for a reason: they give us fresh air, clean water, food, protection, and of course, incredible landscapes to explore. Still, even though people talk more and more about the environment, many of us don’t realize how big the problem of deforestation really is. Illegal logging, or tree-poaching, is one of the main hidden causes – and its effects are already visible in our daily lives and will affect future generations even more.
This project brings together 36 young people (18–23 years old) from Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland – countries that all share parts of the Carpathian Mountains, also known as the “Carpathian Garden”. Together, we’ll dive deeper into the issue of deforestation, discover why tree-poaching is such a threat, and learn how we can take action to protect nature.
📍 The project will take place in Sâmbăta de Sus, Romania, right at the foot of the Carpathians, close to the highest mountain peak in the country. The location is perfect for connecting with nature – we’ll hike through the forest, see firsthand how deforestation leaves its mark, and even get our hands dirty by planting new trees.
Over 9 days, the program will include:
✨ Fun icebreakers, team-building and intercultural evenings to get to know each other.
🌍 Workshops and discussions on deforestation, tree-poaching, and how these affect our lives.
♻️ Practical activities like repurposing paper waste and practicing selective recycling.
🥾 A hike in the Carpathian forest to connect with nature and see the problem up close.
🌳 A tree-planting activity where each of us will leave a positive footprint in the Carpathians.
🏞️ A study visit to Brașov to meet forestry experts and learn from their experience.
🎉 Creative and social activities (committees, secret friend game, reflection moments, etc.).
By the end of the project, participants will:
✔️ Understand more about how deforestation and tree-poaching impact our environment.
✔️ Learn to recognize signs of illegal logging and what can be done about it.
✔️ Develop eco-friendly habits like waste reduction and recycling.
✔️ Feel more connected to nature and motivated to protect it.
✔️ Improve teamwork, communication, and English skills.
✔️ Experience life in a multicultural environment and make lifelong friendships.
Most importantly, this project is about raising awareness and taking action together. We want to inspire young people to protect the forests of the Carpathians – and to bring that energy back home, spreading the message in their own communities.
