"Biking the Baltics" was an educational bike expedition by three members of Asociația Cloud Five, cycling over 1,000 km along the Baltic Sea coast to explore local culture and sustainable mobility.

PARTICIPANTS' PROFILE: Members of Cloud Five who were motivated to practise sport and to develop their teamwork, planning, organisation, camping and survival skills, and who hope that their activity will inspire other young people to take up bikepacking.

DESCRIPTION: In July 2023, three members of Asociația Cloud Five initiated an educational bike expedition across the Baltic countries, with the aim of discovering the local culture, promoting an active lifestyle and understanding how cycling can contribute to the development of the European key competences. The project was designed as an experiential learning process, intended to serve as a model for future bikepacking activities for the youth community of Harghita County.
After four months of logistical planning and preparation, the team travelled from Bucharest to Skavsta (Sweden), where the expedition on two wheels began. Over two weeks, the participants cycled more than 1,000 kilometres along the Baltic Sea coast, passing through places such as Tallinn, Haapsalu, Pärnu, Riga, Liepāja and Klaipėda. Along the way, they camped in nature, interacted with local people and observed how sustainable mobility, cycling and responsible tourism are integrated into the everyday life of northern communities.
This experience was not only a sporting adventure, but also a process of intercultural learning: the team members analysed how cycling can support the development of competences such as autonomy, sense of initiative, critical thinking, lifelong learning and active citizenship. Their interactions with the people they met along the way highlighted shared European values: respect, sustainability and cultural openness.
The results and observations from this expedition will form the basis of future local bikepacking activities in Harghita, aimed at encouraging young people to discover nature, their communities and themselves through sport, active learning and responsible exploration.
